Nestled at the foot of the very rugged
and scenic Beartooth Mountains, the small historic town of Red Lodge, Montana
is a summer visitor's paradise. It is the eastern gateway to the spectacular
Beartooth Highway, which climbs
through alpine scenery to an elevation of 10,947 feet. Charles Kuralt called
this drive 'The most spectacular highway in America'. The highway typically
opens for the summer in late May or June, but can be temporarily closed by snow
even in summer months. The seventy-mile
journey will take you to
Cooke City, Montana and the Northeastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
